Strategic Energy and the New Jersey Market Structure
On August 1, 2003, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities removed the rate caps for more than 1,700 of the state's largest electricity customers grouped under Commercial and Industrial Energy Pricing (CIEP).
Under CIEP, these large customers (1,250 kW peak usage and above) served by the state's incumbent electric utilities are now exposed to hourly market-based rates and the unpredictability that can mean for electricity budgets. Furthermore, those who are still with the utility are paying an additional half-penny per kilowatt-hour (kWh) Retail Margin fee created to encourage switching. In effect, no incentive exists for these customers to remain with their utility.
Strategic Energy is focusing its efforts on helping these large customers reduce their electricity costs, and when market conditions permit, mitigate their exposure to the ups and downs of the electricity market by locking in a long-term price per kWh. Customers may also choose Strategic Energy's Hourly Product, which allows customers to "float" with the hourly market while avoiding the Retail Margin fee charged by the utility.
